How will you get there?
- Buy a wagon with Travel Oregon inc.
The most popular way of travelling west is the Conestoga Wagon and was frequently refered to as a prairie schooner. It was a wagon made of oak, hickory or maple wood with 4-7 wooden hoops on it. A canvas would be pulled over the hoops and rubbed with oil to waterproof it. It is what gave it the name the covered wagon. The wagon could never hold more than 2,000 lbs.
- Conestoga wagons were pulled by oxen because they were stronger than horses and mules.
- Pioneers almost always travelled in groups of wagons called wagon trains or caravans. The Captain was in charge of the wagon train and made important decisions.
